Review of Netflix’s Hubie Halloween

With Halloween around the corner, it’s always right to sit and watch Halloween movies with some family or a group of friends. There’s so many to choose from: horror movies like InsidiousNightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, or a classic like Halloween. You could also watch a comedy like Scary Movie, A Haunted House, or Hocus Pocus.

In Hubie Halloween, Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler), who seems to be the center of attention for mean pranks and jokes, needs to keep the town safe on Halloween night. It’s something he’s always liked to do, except this year is different. A strange creature is on the loose and it’s up to Hubie to save the community.

The film takes place in Salem, Massachusetts. I have never been there myself and growing up I didn’t go to many haunted trails or attractions, however, this movie gave me a slight idea of what being in Salem on Halloween is like. The decorations in the movie are very over-the-top; if you love Halloween, prepare to be amazed by Hubie’s front lawn. It’s filled with pumpkins, fake tomb stones and different monsters and creatures!

Like any other Adam Sandler movie you’ve watched, there’s an assortment of great actors/actresses. This movie features a ton of familiar faces, including the usual crew: Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, and Tim Meadows. Anytime these people are cast in films together, there’s a guaranteed laugh. Ben Stiller even makes an appearance in the very beginning of the movie. Although he’s in the movie for a short period of time, he’s the one that sets the tone.

There is also a handful of popular Disney stars like China Anne McClain, Peyton List, Bradley Steven Perry, and Karan Brar. Karan Brar appears more than the rest and seems to be the ring leader of the pranks they pull on Hubie. That is until his character, Deli Mike Mundi, is taken by the mysterious creature from a cornfield.

Even Stranger Things star, Noah Schnapp, makes an appearance. He’s the typical 9th grade boy trying to impress the upperclassman mean girl. He is cast as the adopted son of Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen), who just so happens to be the love of Hubie’s life.

Some other notable appearances in the film are Sandler’s wife, Jackie Sandler, as well as their two daughters, Sadie and Sunny Sandler. There’s one moment in the film to keep an eye out for where Sunny and Adam connect. He’s giving trick-or-treating advice during lunch time and he compliments her. Since they are actually family in real life, it was definitely an “aww” moment.

Overall, the cast was pretty great. There are plenty of jokes and even some easter eggs too! If you happen to come across Hubie Halloween on Netflix, you should definitely give it a watch!
