In honor of International Women’s Day, I found this week’s review only fitting to be inspired by my favorite empowered poetess, Nikita Gill. Nikita Gill can be considered today as one of the world’s most successful Instagram poets. With already 559,000 followers and counting the young woman has already made a huge impact in the world of online writers. Hailing from Belfast UK, Gill does more than just write poetry. The young author also is an advocate for women’s rights and attends many marches, protests, and is more than vocal in her opinions on female equality throughout all sources of her online platform.
Although Gill has now published six works of her own and grown her platform on both Instagram and Twitter, she like many authors was rejected numerous times before her final break. One hundred and thirty-seven times to be exact. Despite this though she held strong and persevered through it all.
One of Nikita Gill’s latest reads is titled Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul. Throughout this collection Gill retells legends, myths, and fairytales most all of us have been told before. Through a feminist lens, you can see the way she crafts the stories into her own, causing many readers to question the things they had been told before. The cliche fairy tales we are told as children are stripped bare of their traditional gender roles and stereotypes and reiterated poetically for an entirely new generation. Nikita Gill gives a modern-day makeover to some of the most well-known stories told to young children in hopes to inspire and plant the seeds of self-love and equality for the young people of today’s world. Through her beautiful words, you will understand why they say the pen is mightier than the sword.
