NEC’s women’s’ soccer team secured the first win of the season, beating Mitchell College 3-2 on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Pilgrims have had a tough season with several close matches.

The ‘Grims lost a tough home match against the Elm’s College Blazers on Oct. 5.

The Blazers took an early lead until NEC freshman midfielder Michelina Follis tied the game 1-1. The Blazers went on to score two more goals, ending the game 3-1.

This game was NEC’s Senior Day, so the fan base was big.

“Was a little slow, but they got on the board, kept it pretty close, but then they had a late goal and made it 3-1, and then that was kind of too much to come back from,” said fan Vaughn Hultgren.

NEC’s goalie was put to work, with the Blazers taking 38 shots on goal.

“The goalie, she was good, she kept fighting and she did not give up. So, she was really good,” said fan Grace Hedlund.

Looking back on the game and the last few years, NEC Senior Forward Shelby McBain said it’s been a tough few years, but the team is working hard.

“This is my fourth year, we struggled last year as well, but I think it is just the chemistry and the wanting to be here compared to being committed. I think we are all committed, but I do not think we are all at the same compete level. Thats what I think our biggest struggle is,” McBain said.

The ‘Grims take on Albertus Magnus College in New Haven Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 19.
