The New England College Pilgrims Football team made history Saturday as they defeated the Plymouth State Panthers 20-14. This game marked the official return of NEC football after a 51-year hiatus.

Sophomore quarterback Icean Taylor took it into the endzone for the team’s first touchdown to start the second quarter.

It wasn’t just the offense that pulled through for the Pilgrims today, according to first-year player Divon Duncan.

“I really want to shout out the d-line,” said Duncan.

The defensive line had many timely stops, including one with 1:13 left in the game with the Panthers on the Pilgrims’ 13-yard line. Down by six, the Panthers went for the fourth down but were quickly broken up by the Pilgrim’s defense, turning possession over to the Pilgrims and sealing the win.

Fans, players, and coaches alike were thrilled at the final score.

NEC Football takes on Plymouth State in the first game of the 2024 season. The Pilgrims added a football program for the first time in 51-years. NEC beat Plymouth on the Panther turf 20-14 on Saturday, Sept. 8.

“I am so happy for these kids. I told them before the ball game that I was very proud them for the way they worked. We’ve only been together for three weeks and to see the result, that’s a reflection of the kids,” said Head Coach Kevin Kelly.

Stephanie Lesperance, NEC Alumna and wife of NEC President Wayne Lesperance said “it felt like Christmas morning” to have football back at NEC.

The Pilgrims take the field again Saturday Sept. 14 where they face the University of New England at the Blue Storm Stadium in Biddeford, Maine at 4:00pm.
