NEC Women’s Ice Hockey team lost an electrifying match to the Spartans of Vermont State Castleton on Friday, November 17.
The game started off strong with a steady Pilgrims defense and an early goal for NEC with Gabrielle Iwinski landing a powerful shot past the Castleton goalie. Iwinski was assisted by teammates Samantha Babbitt and Kate Devlin. Coming in at a little over four minutes into the game, the lead was looking bright for Pilgrims women’s hockey.
For the majority of the game, though, Castleton would prove to be a competitive opponent. The Spartans answered the early goal with their own in the first period, just after the 13 minute mark. This would continue with the Spartans increasing their lead 4-1 near the end of the third period.
The final score of the game came with just over two minutes left in regulation, with freshman Samantha Babbitt scoring against Castleton, assisted by fellow freshman Conley Ladabouche, ending the game in a 4-2 loss for the NEC Pilgrims.
Despite the loss, NEC women’s hockey remain competitive. Over the Thanksgiving break, the Pilgrims lost to the Plymouth State Panthers 4-2 and beat Albertus Magnus College 1-0.
The Pilgrims play home at Lee Clement Arena Tuesday against Norwich University Tuesday at 6 pm.
