Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took part in a town hall in the Simon Great Room at New England College on Thursday, April 20, as he considers a presidential run. In a full room, Christie criticized front-runner Donald Trump and touched on the problems facing America.
Christie started the night by sharing his thoughts on Donald Trump, whom he used to support.
“He failed us as a President based on the promises he made us,” Christie said.
Christie repeatedly called Trump a “liar,” due to his “lack of following through.”
Christie said Trump failed by not finishing the wall along the border of Mexico, not repealing Obamacare, and for the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
“He undermined our democracy because he was angry that we didn’t re-elect him,” Christie said.
Christie fielded questions from the audience about social security, prescription drugs, the price of college tuition, and energy.
On the topic of Social Security, Christi said if the system doesn’t change it would become bankrupt in seven years. He went on to explain how he would get rid of Obamacare, to fix the issues.
Christie spoke against pharmaceutical advertising, blaming companies for spending money rather than making drugs, like insulin, more affordable.
“I would reduce the price rapidly,” he said.
To make higher education more affordable, Christie said schools that raise tuition above the rate of inflation should not receive federal funds.
When asked about energy, Christie said all options should be considered, including nuclear, fossil fuels, wind, and solar.
In response to a question from NEC President Wayne Lesperance, Christie said he supported New Hampshire’s tradition of holding the first presidential primary, despite his disappointing finish in 2016.
“I’m not sure I get to make that decision but I’m not going anywhere else,” he said.
