NEC students gathered in the Tortington Arms pub to watch the Boston Red Sox begin their 2023 season on Thursday, March 30. The Sox lost a close game to the Baltimore Orioles. After a late game rally, the Orioles won 10-9.
Students watched the game, ate peanuts and cracker jacks, and discussed the team and their new season. Some students had differing opinions on how they think the team might do.
“I think they will do terrible and not finish above .500,” said NEC student Gavin Bibeau, who organized the event in the pub.
“Hopefully they make it to the playoffs, and they can get over the hump instead of last year and finish above .500,” said NEC student James O’Leary, who attended the viewing event.
While the students may have different opinions on their success, the Red Sox went on to win their next two games against the Orioles. They won those games by scores of 9-8 and 9-5 giving the Red Sox the opening series win.
Adley Rutschman took over opening day for the Orioles, going 5-5 with a home run, and four runs batted in.
The Red Sox finished last in the American League East last year, with a record of 78-84. They did not make the playoffs.
