Boston University topped Western Michigan University in the NCAA Division one Men’s Ice Hockey regionals Wednesday.
The tournament was held at The Southern New Hampshire Arena in Manchester.
After a slow start, Western Michigan University (WMU) got the first puck in the net but the goal was overturned after a review by the referees. The period remained scoreless until Lan Hutson from Boston University (BU) scored at the 15:24 mark. The period ended with the BU Terriers ahead 1-0.
BU came into the second period fired up, scoring two goals less than two minutes apart. At 12:27 in the second period, BU’s Jay O’Brien tried throwing himself in front of the goal to stop a shot from WMU’s Jason Polin, but Polin scored, making it a 3-1 game for The Terriers. BU’s Wilmer Skoog scored just after 17 minutes into the third period making it a 4-1 game.
WMU started to play a more physical game coming into the third, which landed them three 2-minute penalties, but it wasn’t enough. The period remained scoreless until WMU pulled their goalie with four minutes left. Just over 17 minutes into the third period, BU’s Ethan Phillips got a runaway goal and scored into the empty net.
BU won the game 5-1. But Max Sasson, a sophomore forward for WMU, said it’s been a strong season.
“It’s a special thing to be a part of, and we’re lucky to be a part of it,” Sasson said.
BU will play the winner of the Cornell vs. Denver game. The puck drops at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the SNHU arena.
