COVID-19 has left its indelible mark across the globe within the past two years, and it is no different now as the new spring semester begins at New England College. With students stuck in their rooms for two weeks taking classes over Zoom, active efforts to cure boredom ensue. With winter in full effect, here are 3 beautiful, engaging, and safe outdoor activities to fill your time until the quarantine is up.

Pat’s Peak

Perhaps the crown jewel of the Henniker area, Pat’s Peak is a ski mountain in NEC’s backyard. With more than 28 trails from bunny slopes to double black diamonds, there is no shortage of paths. Open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. there is ample time to pack up and go skiing after class.

Even if you are not an experienced skier, tubing is offered for those that are just seeking a thrill for the day.

Being a student at NEC gives you an incredible advantage with prices as well. Just by presenting your NEC ID card, it gives you a free lift ticket and $10 rentals.

Fox State Forest

Five miles away from campus is the Fox State Forest, a snowshoer’s dream. With dozens of miles of trails the Fox State Forest Ridge Trail offers a true rugged forest experience. These paths offer a quiet break from the constant computer screens and the buzzing of phones.

As long as you are properly dressed, it will be a peaceful walk that you can take alone or with friends.

Azalea Park

For those who do not have a car on campus, luckily there is plenty of trails on campus to explore. Azalea Park, located behind the Colby dorms, offers a variety of different trails that hug along the Contoocook River. With features like the covered bridge and benches that sit right on the water, this park can give you the outdoor experience and still give you enough time to get back to class.
