Welcome back to the days of the 1930s. The game “Cuphead” takes the look and sound of 1930’s cartoons and puts it into a videogame. The style of the game is very aesthetically pleasing. The game was developed by Studio MDHR and is exclusively for Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. The game has been in development for a long time it was first teased in 2014 at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). It gained a fandom relatively quickly because of the style. However, fans were kept waiting until September 29th, 2017, when the game finally was released.
The game is a run and gun platformer with many unique boss levels scattered throughout. There is a world map that consists of three islands and then a final level, that players must navigate to get to the stages and boss battles. The funny thing is that the love for the graphics wavers when you start the game since it is pretty difficult. Some game journalists struggled to beat the tutorial which was just simply explaining the controls. I personally did not have this problem and found it to be one of the easier parts of the game.
At times levels and bosses can be very rage enduing. However, the game is not impossible to play. Once you fail a few times, you start to notice the patterns and way the enemies attack which makes the levels go more smoothly since it slowly becomes muscle memory. That being said one small move can send you snowballing into failure that’s where the frustration comes in. Cuphead can be played with two people, player one being Cuphead and the other player being Mugman. It honestly makes the game a tad bit easier since you can be revived in the level instead of having to start all over.
I personally am loving “Cuphead” at the moment. From the fantastic animation to the challenging gameplay I give this game a 8.5 out of 10. Well, me and Mugman got to get back to collecting souls before The Devil comes after ours.
