The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) at New England College is organizing a series of events celebrating Black History Month. The events include a social justice day and a guest speaker.
“My goal is to open doors in the community to learn more about what it means to be a black person and what is the history behind the black community,” said Dr. Erica Sigauke, Director of ODI.
Black History Month has been honored each February since 1976. The month is dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the contribution black people have made to the United States.
“I’ve come to appreciate that Black history is American history and that so much of American history that we celebrate is Black history,” said Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr. in an email to the campus.
Sigauke said she hopes the events show the importance of black history and why more people should learn about it. The goal for these events is to inspire change and leadership in not just NEC’s black students but all of its students, she said. Students will learn about social justice and what it means to be African American today.
