The New England College Women’s Volleyball team won their home opener Tuesday, defeating the Northern Vermont University-Johnson Badgers 3-1.
The beginning of the first two sets started slowly for the ‘Grims and small errors kept the score close for each set. Even with that, NEC made a run still came out on top of each set 25-16 set 1 and 25-17 set 2. In the third set, the ‘Grims trailed the entire set and lost 25-14.
The ‘Grims trailed most of the fourth set but gained energy with emphatic kills from the Grims hitters, including two by Torrance Robertson. NEC took the fourth set 25-17.
Senior Captain Tatiana Sampson praised the team for push through the fourth set.
“It is definitely a mental thing. Overall, we bring ourselves together as a team and talk about what we did wrong and what we need to fix, and we try our best to execute that on the court. To try and at least fake the energy if you don’t have it, that way everyone else could stay brought up and we can finish the game strong,” Sampson said.
The ‘Grims record stands at 3-2, including two wins and one loss in the Elmira quad tournament, and a loss Thursday at Gordon College.
“Going forward we need to start strong and finish strong, we make a lot of mistakes, and we need to fix that, and we need to have a strong mentality,” Sampson said.
