NEC students are likely to recognize Shannon Sciria because he can be seen on the sidelines as the Assistant Coach of the Men’s Basketball Team and helping students in his role at the Office of Career and Life Planning.

Sciria, 37, grew up in Barre, Vermont. He attended Franklin Pierce University for one year and then transferred to Colby Sawyer College where he played basketball and graduated in 2009. He then received his master’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University.

At NEC, Sciria works full-time job in the Office of Career and Life Planning (CLP), helping students with resumes, cover letters, and finding jobs.

“Really whatever the next step for students after college and helping them get secured with everything they need. It’s something I take pride in as it’s a service that NEC students have for life,” Sciria said.

Elija Guillomaitre, a senior, has spent a lot of time working with Sciria.

“Shannon has helped me in more ways than I can count. He’s really helped me plan out my future and talk about my options going forward after graduation. He’s also helped me apply for Graduate Assistant positions for basketball programs like VCU,” Guillomaitre said.

Sciria said his role at CLP and with the men’s basketball team blend together perfectly.

“I’m able to mentor students on the court as well as helping students get ready for the next chapter of their life which is great,” Sciria said.

At this point in his career, Sciria has carved out a nice niche with New England College and the Henniker community. His goal is to continue mentoring college students as well as the athletes on his team.

“Whether it’s a student or basketball player, if they need help with something I want them to genuinely feel like when that conversation was over they felt better from when it started,” Sciria said.
