Having completed the first three weeks back on campus, students are starting to get a feel for how their classes will operate the rest of the semester. For some, it will be a breeze, but for the majority of others, there will be struggles along the way. Whether that means they have fallen behind early, are having time management issues, or are just struggling to understand the class material, it can be tough to regain momentum on their own. If this sounds like you, there’s no time like the present to take back control of the semester.
The SHIP, which stands for Students Have Immense Potential, can help you realize that potential. Located just inside the front door of the Simon Center, on the right side, it replaced the bookstore last year. It is open from 8 AM – 8 PM Monday-Thursday and 8 AM – 4:30 PM on Friday, which makes it accessible even for students with the busiest schedules. The SHIP is staffed regularly by academic advisors, coaches, and mentors. To find contact information for New England College’s long list of advisors and mentors, follow this link:
Once there, use the “Find” function within your webpage to search for “Advising” and “Mentor”. This will show you the phone number and email address for all advisors and mentors.
The SHIP also hosts multiple events and workshops throughout the semester including writing workshops, events hosted by Career & Life Planning, and useful informational presentations, such as how to use DegreeWorks and fill out FAFSA. Check your email to find the list of all events taking place in The SHIP this semester and stay tuned for more.
But the newest crew members of The SHIP are students just like yourself. They have taken many of the same classes, experienced many of the same hardships, and have come through on the other side. They are an excellent resource and can relate to the struggles you’re going through. They are called Peer Success Coaches. The Peer Success Coach program was developed last year with the goal of providing peer-supported guidance for undergraduate students throughout their entire NEC experience. They are ready to help you in any way they can and specialize in areas such as time management, study skills, and developing personalized academic strategies.
Plus, they will run workshops throughout the semester and act as an excellent connection to other campus resources. Their goal is to help students build a sense of community by making them feel comfortable and confident about their future at New England College.
Taylor Maher, a sophomore Physical Education major, is a new hire for the Peer Success Coach Program. She says that leaving home to come to New England College was a difficult transition and that she wishes The SHIP was open during her freshman year. “I’m six hours away, I’m from New Jersey, so I get homesick sometimes. I think having people here that are also from different states would have helped me adjust a little better.” She is from a large town in New Jersey and can relate to the difficulties students face when they move to a small college town. Taylor prides herself on being able to help students prioritize and become better organized, making her an ideal Peer Success Coach.
Madison Foley, a senior Communication Studies major, was also hired this semester and is eager to start meeting with students. She hasn’t seen many people come through The SHIP yet, but says that beginning to help more students would make her feel like she is fulfilling her purpose as a Peer Success Coach. Madison says that when she came to New England College as a sophomore, she “was so lost” and wishes that she had The SHIP as a resource. As someone who transferred to NEC from another college, she says that she can relate to many incoming students and some of the hardships they may experience during their adjustment to a new school. “I feel like since I’m a transfer, I can understand how a lot of people feel very lost in college. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was in the wrong school and it felt very overwhelming to try to fix things. So I feel like if they come to me, I can give them a good perspective and understand where they’re coming from.”
No matter what you’re going through, there is always going to be a Peer Success Coach who is a good fit to help you out. Next time you’re around, stop by to chat with a Peer Success Coach. It’s time to board The SHIP.

Seems like such a good resource for students! Wish it was here my freshman year, as it would have been SO helpful.
