“In the year before the United States entered World War I, a German entrepreneur seized a brief opportunity to make an astronomical fortune for German companies and himself. Bankrolled by substantial funds from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and two large German insurance companies, he created a large company based in NYC that insured transatlantic steamship trade. The entrepreneur spent the way years in the U.S. under virtual house arrest, exiled on a small island off the coast of Maine.”
