Marvel Games was approached in early 2016 by Sony Interactive Entertainment with the idea of creating a Marvel Universe based video game. The game was first announced during Sony’s press conference on June 13th, 2016. The first released gameplay footage was shown the following year at Sony’s 2017 E3 conference. The presenation displayed captivating on screen action, new features, screening, and first person action packed cinematic formatting.

But, due to a scheduling conflict, Spider Man’s release was bumped back to 2018. The game became the first licensed Marvel game developed by Insomniac Games, a company who has spent over twenty years in the industry developing well-known games such as Spyro, the Resistance, and Ratchet and Clank.

The first game trailer was released during a Sony promotional event and was shortly released there after to the public. The trailer followed Peter Parker through New York City as a new team threatens the city: The Sinister Six. The villainous group consists of The Vulture, Scorpion, Mr. Negative, Rhino, Electro, and leader, Dr. Otto Octavius. After Norman Osborn, the president of Oz Corp, terminates Octavius’s grant and receives all of his research, Octavius later invents four mechanical arms to attach to himself and to assist in freeing the rest of the villains from prison. Thus, he becomes Doctor Octopus. Parker must overcome all odds stacked against him in order to save New York City.

The game includes references to several other Marvel heroes, villains, and properties, such as The Avengers Tower. Other Marvel characters who are referenced appear in the game are Tony Stark, The Avengers, DareDevil, Black Cat, Wilson Fisk, and Co-Creator of Marvel Comics and Company President, Stan Lee.

The game is a Playstation 4 exclusive, but with tremendous reviews from critics like Metacritic, IGN, and Trusted Reviews, the video game has received nothing but positive reviews since its release on September 7th, 2018. The Game scored a 8/10 and is by far one of the best Spider-Man games ever produced.

The game also has exclusive attires of different Spider-Man Suits that can be downloaded after each level is completed after every boss fight. Boss fights are the final big encounters within the game  Spider-Man is faced with a new foe he must defeat in order to continue on his mission. This cycle concludes until all the villains are defeated and New York City is deemed safe.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is an entertaining and highly anticipated game. Whether web swinging into the open streets of Manhattan or exploring an in depth quality of New York City, fans have a choice of different side missions they can play through throughout the campaign. It’s an entriguing yet impactful way to play through a wide open environment without ever feeling bored or repetitive. The game hopefully suggests a new direction of what’s to come next for future Marvel videos games.
