Four Brothers is an amazing action and drama film that takes place in an early 2000’s Detroit, Michigan. One day Evelyn Mercer walks into a convenience store to get some food, when a robbery hits. While the two guys are robbing the store, they kill Evelyn and the cashier. Her four adopted sons–Bobby Mercer (Mark Wahlberg), Angel Mercer (Tyrese Gibson), and Jack Mercer (Garrett Hedlund)–all show up at Jeremiah Mercer’s (Andre Benjamin) house for the wake. While they catch up with each other, two cops, Lieutenant Green (Terrence Howard) and Detective Fowler (Josh Charles) show up to ask them questions about their mother’s death. If the brothers only knew: the cops were not what they seemed. While at their mother’s home, they decide to find their mother’s killer. They want revenge. They will not stop until they catch the killer. As the brothers get closer to finding the killers, the cops step in and tell them they will deal with this. The brothers respond by saying they are not going to stop until they finish the deed. As the brother’s get closer to who killed their mother, everything starts to hit the fan.
Paramount Pictures produced Four Brothers and it was directed by John Singleton. The characters and town felt like the ghettos of Detroit in the 2000’s. The two writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett did a good job writing the screenplay, from the way the town looks, to how the characters look, how they act, and how gangs would act in real life. The dialogue was well written, none of the conversation seemed off or awkward; the conversations seemed very real. The four men who played the brothers had chemistry, like they were actual brothers. The actors were awesome; the audience could tell the actors were putting their heart and soul into their characters. It was nice to see Wahlberg acting like an older brother and tough guy because he typically is fighting for himself or a girl, in this movie he is fighting for his family. He shows his emotions well, making the audience feel what he is feeling. One performance that stood out was Garrett Hedlund as Jack. When he acted and showed his emotion the audience felt what he was feeling. You can tell he got into his character. There’s this one scene in which Jack is crying for the loss of his mother, you could see real sadness within Hedlund’s eyes.
Four Brothers came out on August 12, 2005 and the movie is rated R for strong violence, language, and sexual content. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes action, drama, and crime films. You just can’t stop watching until you know who wins.
